The idea began on a road trip, one night in the desert, around a fire, sage on the wind, and became clearer with every mile: across places, landscapes, and traditions, one thing remained constant. People gather around flame. They seek presence, reflection, renewal, and ways of feeling connected to themselves, one another, and the spaces they inhabit.

Tools for the practice
Not everyone has access to a bonfire. But the instinct is still there, the pull toward flame, the need to sit with something, to let the day burn down into something quieter. A smoke practice is that, scaled to the space you have. Five minutes. A window cracked open. A bundle of sage or Palo Santo resting in cast iron, smoke rising slowly, the room shifting almost imperceptibly.
We built Flame + Flora for that moment. Inspired by our own relationship with fire and botanicals, and by the traditions that have carried this practice across generations and continents, we set out to create objects worthy of it. Not decorative. Not disposable. Cast iron that develops character with use. Acacia wood that warms to the touch. Botanicals hand-harvested from the places they've always grown, gathered the way they've always been gathered.

THE PRACTICE
What is a burning practice?
Burning botanicals is one of the oldest human instincts there is, encoded in us long before it had a name. Palo Santo, Sage, Eucalyptus, resins, and herbs of every kind have been burned across cultures throughout history: smudged in Indigenous North American ceremony, burned as sahumar in Latin American tradition, used in saining across Scotland and the Gaelic world, and offered as incense across India, the Middle East, and beyond. Each tradition brought its own meaning. The instinct was always there.
People come to a burning practice for different reasons, some to clear and reset a space, some for the quiet it creates, some for the grounding it offers, and some simply for the scent and the ritual of it. However it shows up for you, the impulse is the same: a moment of intention, tended with flame and botanicals.
Not everyone has access to a bonfire. This is a version of it you can keep close.
How do I begin?
You don't need much. A few minutes, your burner and tray, a botanical, and a flame.
Set your burner on the tray on a flat, heat-safe surface. Open a window slightly — fresh air helps the smoke move and keeps the space from getting heavy. Hold your botanical at an angle and light the tip. Let it catch for a few seconds, then gently blow out the flame. It will smoulder and smoke on its own from there. Rest it in the burner.
That's it. What you do with the minutes that follow is yours. Some people sit quietly. Some move through their space, letting the smoke drift into corners. Some use it to mark a transition — the start of a morning, the end of a work day, a moment before sleep. There's no wrong way to tend a flame.
When you're done, press the lit end gently against the burner to extinguish it. Let everything cool completely before handling.

What botanicals do you carry?
We carry four botanicals, each hand-harvested and sustainably sourced:
- Palo Santo, harvested from naturally fallen branches in the dry coastal forests of Peru and Ecuador
- Eucalyptus, hand-harvested from ethically cultivated sources in California's coastal groves
- White Sage, hand-harvested from ethically cultivated crops in the coastal mountains and chaparral regions of Southern California
- Blue Sage, hand-harvested from ethically cultivated crops in the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico
Each comes as a hand-tied bundle, finished with 100% cotton.
Are your botanicals ethically sourced?
Yes. Every botanical we carry is either hand-harvested from naturally fallen growth (Palo Santo) or hand-harvested from ethically cultivated crops grown for natural renewal (White Sage, Blue Sage, Eucalyptus). Sourcing responsibly, for the land and the traditions these botanicals come from, is core to how we work.
What is a Bee Light?
Bee Lights are our tealights, hand-poured in-house from pure Canadian beeswax in small batches. They're set in recyclable metal cups with a cotton wick, made for clean, earth-based burning, a steady, golden flame for moments of ritual,
reflection, and presence.
What's included in your sets?
Our cast iron burner and acacia wood tray can be purchased individually, together as a set, or bundled with a botanical of your choice (Eucalyptus, Palo Santo, White Sage, or Blue Sage) or our metal tongs.
Can I use the wood tray on its own?
Absolutely. Handcrafted from solid acacia wood in the Philippines, the tray nests with the burner but also stands on its own. A simple surface for gathering, carrying, and displaying your tools or botanicals.
What are the tongs for?
Our metal tongs are designed for safely tending flame, embers, and burning botanicals once they're too small to hold by hand.
CARE
How do I safely use my incense burner?
Always burn on a heat-safe, flat surface, away from flammable materials, drafts, and anything that could be knocked over. Never leave burning botanicals unattended. The cast iron burner retains heat after use, so allow it to fully cool before handling or moving it.
How do I care for the cast iron burner?
Wipe out ash with a dry cloth once cooled, this is usually all it needs. If you need to wash it, warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap are fine. Dry it immediately and thoroughly afterward, and wipe the interior with a thin layer of neutral oil to maintain the seasoning. Avoid soaking, abrasive scrubbers, and the dishwasher.
How do I care for the acacia wood tray?
Wipe clean with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid soaking or leaving it in direct, prolonged sunlight, which can dry or warp the wood over time.
How should I store my botanicals?
Keep bundles in their Travel Tin in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to preserve their scent and prevent moisture or mold.
Is the smoke safe to breathe? Any contraindications?
Burning botanicals produces real smoke, so always use in a well-ventilated space. If you have asthma, respiratory sensitivities, or are pregnant, we'd recommend checking with a healthcare provider before use, and avoiding the smoke if it causes any irritation. As with any open flame, never leave burning botanicals unattended, and keep away from children and pets.

Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we currently ship both domestically and internationally to the U.S. Rates are calculated at checkout based on your location and order weight.
How long will shipping take?
Orders typically ship within 1 to 3 business days of purchase. Transit time after that depends on your location and is calculated at checkout. International orders are delivered DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), so your customs fees and import duties are covered.
Can I track my order?
Yes, once your order ships, you'll receive a tracking number so you can follow it to your door.
What is your return policy?
Cast iron burners, wood trays, and metal tongs can be returned or exchanged within 30 days if unused and in original condition. If it's not quite what you expected, we want to make it right.
Botanicals (Palo Santo, Eucalyptus, White Sage, Blue Sage) and Bee Lights are final sale once opened or used, as they can't be resold once burned. If your botanicals or Bee Lights arrive damaged or there's an issue with your order, reach out to us at [email] and we'll sort it out.
